In order to meet the challenges of a changing operating environment, the National Meteorological Services (NMSs) of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden have signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing the Northern Europe Aviation Meteorology Consortium (NAMCON). The cooperation and consortium are built on the concept of equal partnership, improved efficiency and high quality of aviation weather services.

As of 1 September 2013, the consortium is operating a virtual office composing of aviation weather services managers in its member states and managed by the Consortium Manager. NAMCON will deliver harmonised, coordinated and mutually backed-up aviation weather services regardless of national borders to all civil and general aviation users. Ongoing development of NAMCON includes the review of potential backup arrangements for aviation forecast centres across borders, flexible use of forecaster resources within the consortium, common competency assessment and quality standards. All of the efforts of NAMCON are aimed to ensure that overlap of tasks is reduced, products are delivered in the same format and are of equal quality.

With NAMCON, the meteorological community is setting a bold ambition level for efficiency and cross-border cooperation unparalleled in Europe. NAMCON is perfectly aligned with the objectives of SES and a practical example of cross-FAB cooperation.

NAMCON efforts were recognised by the European Union with a Special mention of the Jury in the 2017 SES Awards.
